I forge weld hundred year old salvaged wrought iron into a thin sheet to begin these bowls. Once the forging is done, I acid etch the wrought iron to reveal the grain structure that often looks like wood. This bowl has a coarse grain that runs perpendicular to the long axis of the bowl.

The process of forging the recess for the candle deforms the starting sphere into a soft, supple, asymmetrical form that is organic in feel, and sometimes reveals fissures in the material that would otherwise be hidden. I cast these canisters in house in small batches from simple yet strong concrete – one of the most basic of building materials. The small imperfections and inconsistencies of the handmade concrete are what make them unique and interesting. I heat and hammer each steel top to create a deep texture and forge and machine the knobs individually. The rich surfaces of the forged steel and cast concrete play off of one another nicely. I seal the concrete with a sealer used for concrete countertops, the lids are sealed with wax.

I modeled the form of the concrete vessel for these oil lamps in a 3D modeling software, 3D printed it, and poured urethane molds for the concrete around the 3D printed pattern. I cast the concrete – one of the most basic of building materials - into the molds in small batches. The small imperfections and inconsistencies of the handmade concrete are what make them unique and interesting. For the wick holder, I forge a small bit of steel under my air hammer in a set of dies I machined. With a bit more fabrication and machine work, that forged piece becomes the wick holder and lid that screws into the oil reservoir, making it spill-proof. The entire reservoir/wick holder assembly fits snugly into the concrete base but can be easily removed for filling.

This bowl incorporates a piece of historic wrought iron, forge welded into one corner. Acid etching the iron reveals its grain structure, reminiscent of wood. It has a burnished black patina with a wax finish.

I salvaged several large rolls of historic telegraph wire that was made prior to the widespread use of steel. The wire is pure iron with very little carbon added and a beautiful material to work with. I forge welded a large bundle of this wire into a bar, flattened it out and shaped it into this bowl. Acid etching reveals the jumble of individual wire strands. The bowl has a burnished black patina with a wax finish.

I start these hooks by heating a steel plate and heavily texturing its surface with my pneumatic forging hammer. Then I press in the notch for the hook, allowing the material to deform and swell around the notch. The result is a soft, clay-like surface on the round face of the hook with undulating ripples around the edges of the notch where the hook attaches. Each hook is a unique individual - no two are exactly alike. The three sizes and right/left configuration allows you to create your own composition, transforming a blank wall into your own installation statement. The hooks attach to the wall with two hidden screws that slide into keyhole slots on the back side of the face plates for a clean , fastener-free look.
